Thank you to everyone who supported our Big Give Christmas Challenge. We raised a fantastic £22,187 in total, made up of online donations and matched funds by our pledgers and our Big Give Champion Dormywood Trust, enabling a community of 1600 access clean water for the first time.
Work is now beginning in Bubogu to provide a community borehole on school grounds, facilitating water collection and reducing time collecting water, which mostly affects girls. Also at the school, we are renovating existing boys’ and girls’ latrines and building an additional girls’ latrine with a washroom. Students and teachers will set up a school hygiene club, and once trained in hygiene and handwashing, will promote good hygiene to the students and the community.
Through the community sanplat programme, materials, tools and training are being provided to locals in how to make a sanplats, dig latrines and build walls and will reduce the problem of open defecation.
As with all our work, we consult local stakeholders throughout, using local labour, training local people to build, maintain sanplats and mend pumps. Forming a Water Committee, which will include both school and community representatives, will ensure cleanliness, security and maintenance of all facilities.
Watch this space! We will keep you up to date on the progress.
