WfK recently completed work to protect Namantooke spring source at Wamulongo village near Iganga. Water was being collected from a pool where animals and people waded in causing contamination.
WfK funded the construction of a dam so that artesian water can be collected safely. The spring water now comes through a pipe in the dam and steps allow access.
The village has 764 people, 362 women and 402 men and prior to the work the nearest clean water was 1.5km away. The water runs constantly and the runoff will be used to grow rice.
The community were involved in the work and a WASH (water, sanitation, health) committee set up to look after the source to ensure that it remains a sustainable source of clean water for years to come. Hygiene training was given by the WfK team to pupils, teachers and the community as part of our holistic approach to improving health in communities
